BHP has locked in its third and most significant renewable electricity agreement for its South Australian copper operations, securing 100 megawatts (MW) of base load renewable supply to power its Olympic Dam, Carrapateena and Prominent Hill sites.

The long-term deal with Neoen will draw on the first 300 MW from the Goyder North Wind Farm, backed by the new 200 MW/800 MWh Goyder Battery and Neoen’s energy management expertise. Both assets are under development near Burra, with BHP as the primary customer.

The Goyder projects are also expected to create up to 550 construction jobs and 20 permanent roles, contributing to regional development while supporting the state’s energy transition.

It’s BHP’s second deal with Neoen and the latest in a string of renewable supply commitments aimed at cutting operational emissions. Combined with the first Neoen agreement, which went live in July 2025, the new arrangement is expected to meet around 70% of Copper SA’s electricity demand with renewable power by FY2030.

“BHP’s Copper SA operations are taking another step forward in our decarbonisation journey,”  BHP asset president Copper SA Anna Wiley said. “We’re using the size and scale of our copper operations to underpin significant new investment in renewable electricity in South Australia.”

BHP has now supported five major renewable infrastructure projects in South Australia as part of its strategy to reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions by at least 30% by FY2030, and achieve net zero operational emissions by 2050.

“Copper is one of the most critical minerals in enabling the global energy transition,” BHP’s group sales and marketing officer Michiel Hovers said. “As global demand for copper continues to grow, BHP is making significant progress in lowering the greenhouse gas emissions intensity of our copper production in South Australia.”
