Critical minerals continue to be the talk of the town, as global supply chains broaden, countries strengthen relationships and reinforce their future-facing strategies.
Australia and Japan’s latest move exemplifies this shift, with Prime Ministers Anthony Albanese and Sanae Takaichi formalising an elevated critical minerals partnership on May 4.
The new joint declaration, which expanded on the concentration of supply chains and their impact on downstream industries, highlighted six critical minerals projects driving the cooperation, all of which were lauded as crucial players in driving diversification.
Ardea Resources and its Kalgoorlie nickel project – Goongarrie hub serves as one of the nation’s largest cobalt resources, and a project that continues to be viewed as a cornerstone of future battery and advanced manufacturing supply chains.
Lynas Rare Earths has been backed by Japanese financing since 2011 and recently commenced heavy rare earth production and bolstered its ties with Japanese partners through a new memorandum of understanding with Japan Australia Rare Earths B.V (JARE).
Alcoa and its gallium recovery project in Western Australia (WA) is a reflection of growing global interest to secure alternative supply chains outside of China; Magnium Australia has seen keen interest from Japan on its pilot plant in Collie, also in WA; and Tivan’s speewah fluorite project – also in WA – is being supported through a joint venture between Sumitomo Corporation and the Japanese Organisation for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC).
RZ Resources, operating in New South Wales with its Copi project, includes participation from Japan’s Marubenei Corporation who invested $15 million into said project, which followed previous investment by JX Advanced Metals Corporation.
But what does this partnership entail, and why now?
At its core, the growing relationship between the two countries is focused on expanding the global resources sector and reducing exposure to concentrated supply chains, all while ensuring long-term access to materials essential for energy transition.
Japan has recently taken to the seas, where drilling ship Chikyu returned in February 2026 after successfully test-mining mud containing rare earths near the island of Minsamitorishima in the Pacific Ocean.
Previous surveys found that the seabed contained high concentrations of rare-earth minerals, with the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) planning to demonstrate a full-scale text excavation in February 2027, according to East Asia Forum (EAF).
This move, however, was questioned by the EAF on its effectiveness as a step forward for the nation’s agenda to improve its mineral supply security, especially as it aims to move away from the economic pressures from its largest, rare earth import source of China.
This builds on Japan’s larger Strategic Innovation Promotion Program, aimed at realising its Society 5.0 vision, which solves societal challenges through advanced science and technology; a campaign where the steady supply of critical minerals could prove to be a key piece.
For Australia, this partnership represents the continuation of long-standing trade ties with Japan, and a deliberate shift in how the nation positions itself within the global critical minerals value chain.
Traditionally viewed as a bulk commodities powerhouse, Australia has increasingly looked to leverage its vast reserves of lithium, nickel, cobalt, and rare earths to move further downstream, thus capturing greater value beyond extraction.
Agreements such as the one with Japan provide a clearer pathway to do so, underpinned by Japanese investment, technical collaboration, and long-term offtake certainty.
This is particularly relevant for projects like Ardea’s Goongarrie hub and Tivan’s Speewah fluorite development, which require significant capital and market confidence to transition from development into sustained production.
By aligning with Japanese partners – many of which have deep expertise in processing and advanced manufacturing – Australian developers are better positioned to overcome one of the sector’s most persistent hurdles of bridging the gap between resource discovery and commercialisation.
At the same time, Australia’s role as a stable, low-risk jurisdiction continues to grow in importance, especially as global supply chains come under increasing scrutiny; reliability has become just as critical as resource availability.
In this context, Australia offers a combination of geological endowment, regulatory transparency and geopolitical alignment that few other nations can replicate, making it an attractive partner for countries seeking to diversify away from more concentrated supply sources.
Increased collaboration with Japan is expected to support the development of domestic processing capabilities, from rare earth separation to battery precursor production, aligning with broader federal ambitions to establish Australia as a key player in the global clean energy economy.
This, in turn, has the potential to drive regional job creation, infrastructure investment and technological advancement across mining and manufacturing hubs.
While Japan’s goal is centred on securing reliable access to critical inputs, Australia stands to gain from a more integrated position within the supply chain itself, with the partnership reflecting a growing recognition that future competitiveness defined by the ability to deliver secure, transparent, and value-added supply into an increasingly complex global market.
