An independent review completed by PwC into WorkSafe’s protocols for responding to inappropriate workplace behaviour in Western Australia’s mining industry has been released.
PwC’s workplace culture expert Elizabeth Shaw was appointed by the Western Australian Government in June 2022 to lead the regulatory review.
PwC reviewed WorkSafe Mines Safety’s enforcement model, organisational capabilities and regulatory actions. Key focus areas included incident reporting processes, risk identification, victim centricity and data collection.
Minister for Mines and Petroleum and Industrial Relations, Bill Johnston, said, “PwC’s regulatory capability review underlines the McGowan Government’s commitment to eliminating inappropriate behaviour from mine sites in WA.
“This report is part of our ongoing efforts to develop and deliver best-practice regulation in the mining industry.
“I intend to seek advice from the independent WorkSafe Commissioner on the findings and recommendations.
“I again call on industry to ensure our mining sector meets community expectations. Bullying, sexual harassment and sexual assault are unacceptable in all workplaces.”
The review forms part of the State Government’s Mental Awareness, Respect and Safety program, which was launched in December 2021. The Regulatory Capability Review of WorkSafe Mines Safety is available here.
