AusIMM’s flagship mining geology event is set to spark new ideas, connections and collaborations in 2026.

Fo
r a curiosity-filled mining geologist, the solution to one question often extracts a new query, setting off an endless cycle of enquiry and discovery.

This restless inquisitiveness fuels many in the field, making a platform that sustains this momentum, and keeps the cycle turning, absolutely essential.

AusIMM’s 14th International Mining Geology Conference, set for 2026, offers exactly that – a vibrant gathering where mining geologists from around the world come together to share insights, tackle challenges and power that ongoing back and forth of curiosity and exploration.

Held every two years, this flagship event has become the premier program for advancing geological science within mining, connecting experts across all career stages to innovate and build lasting professional networks.

At the helm of the 2026 conference is chairperson Daniel Howe, a seasoned mining geologist with more than 20 years’ experience in the industry. His journey into geology began almost by chance, but quickly transformed into a lifelong passion driven by a relentless desire to understand more.

“I didn’t even know what geology was when I started university,” Howe told Mining. “But once I fell in love with the science, my questions only multiplied.”

Howe’s enthusiasm mirrors that of the broader geological community, and he sees the conference as an essential forum where this collective drive for knowledge can be supported and expanded.

“It’s an opportunity for mining geologists from diverse backgrounds to come together, exchange ideas and learn from each other’s experiences,” he said.

Whether it’s tackling complex geological challenges or exploring emerging technologies, the event creates a space where questions can be asked – and answers discovered – collectively.

For seasoned experts, the conference offers a chance to present high-level technical papers and engage with the latest industry developments. For younger geologists and recent graduates, on the other hand, it’s a vital platform for professional growth, mentorship and exposure to new perspectives.

Howe believes this blend of experience and fresh ideas is what drives the field forward, helping it evolve in step with shifting technologies and practices.

Reflecting on the 13th edition from 2024, he highlighted several standout moments, including record attendance, a diverse range of presentations, and new initiatives like an industry challenge that was a creative, problem-solving experience designed to encourage innovative thinking that was “an absolute hit”.

“Among those successes, we had the young professionals’ day, where emerging talent engaged directly with industry leaders, underscoring the conference’s commitment to nurturing the next generation,” Howe said.

Looking ahead to 2026, Howe’s excitement is palpable. The advisory committee is energised and determined, he said, to deliver a comprehensive program that embraces cutting-edge advances such as machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) applications in geology.

“There’s so much to look forward to,” Howe said. “These technologies are transforming how we interpret geological data, making our work more efficient and insightful.”

The International Mining Geology Conference remains a vital event, a place where curiosity is welcomed, innovation is sparked and connections are forged.

For anyone passionate about mining geology, it’s an opportunity not to be missed because, according to Howe, “this is going to be the best one yet”.

AusIMM’s 14th International Mining Geology Conference will be held at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre from April 21–22, 2026.
