The mining worker who was killed at BHP’s Olympic Dam on 25 April 2023 has been identified as Nathan Scholz from Two Wells, South Australia. Mr Scholz worked for Exact Mining Services, a contracting partner to BHP.

BHP has extended its deepest sympathies to Mr Scholz’s family, friends and colleagues, and said its primary focus is supporting them at this difficult time.

Emergency crews were called to the site in the early hours of 25 April, following reports a pedestrian had been critically injured in a collision with a vehicle on private property within the boundaries of the mines. Mr Scholtz was pronounced dead at the scene.

South Australia Police’s investigation is ongoing, and will include preparing a report for the Coroner. Major Crash investigators attended the scene to assist with the investigation and SafeWork South Australia were notified.

BHP has launched its own investigation into the incident, and is also working with South Australia Police and SafeWork SA to understand what happened.
