Mineral Resources (MinRes) has officially broken ground on its Lamb Creek iron ore project, a strategic development designed to extend the lifespan of its Pilbara hub by more than five years.
With all regulatory approvals secured, the company is targeting first ore by the fourth quarter of the 2025–26 financial year (FY26).
The new open-pit mine has a capacity of 7.5 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa). Located just 50km from the existing Iron Valley operation, the site allows MinRes to blend product from both mines for export via Utah Point in Port Hedland. To fast-track development, MinRes is utilising its in-house engineering and construction teams to build essential infrastructure, including a crushing plant and a 16km haul road.
“Developing Lamb Creek supports our five-year outlook for the Pilbara Hub, which plays an important role in our iron ore portfolio,” MinRes iron ore chief executive Chris Soccio said.
“I extend my thanks to the countless MinRes staff who have played a role in bringing Lamb Creek to life – for many, this project has taken years of hard work, approvals and planning.”
A key aspect of the project is the seamless transition of the workforce. As the current Wonmunna operation winds down, MinRes has confirmed that all site-based staff will transfer to Lamb Creek once operational, ensuring no job losses.
The development underpins the Pilbara Hub’s production guidance of 9–10Mtpa for FY26, leveraging recent reserve statements of 161Mt across the hub.
