The Western Australian Government is set to undertake a targeted review to improve Native Title and Aboriginal cultural heritage processes in the state’s mining and exploration sector.
As part of the move, the government will work in conjunction with the National Native Title Tribunal to consider options to make processes pertaining to the mining sector more efficient, effective and equitable.
It’ll also consider how these processes deliver social, economic and community benefits while also contributing to the state’s commitments under the National Agreement on Closing the Gap.
The four-month review will kick off this month, and will consist of a series of on-Country meetings, targeted roundtables and workshops.
Premier Roger Cook said the review is focused on improving outcomes for both Traditional Owners and industry.
“Native Title is a major feature of the social, cultural and economic landscape in Western Australia, with more than 90 per cent of the State subject to a Native Title outcome,” he said.
“This targeted review is a timely and important opportunity to strengthen the way we manage Aboriginal cultural heritage in WA and find better ways to navigate statutory consultation processes in the mining and exploration sector, under the current legislative frameworks.”
Under Australian law, a native title recognises that some Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people continue to hold rights and interests in land and water.
Aboriginal Affairs Minister Don Punch said this review will improve the effectiveness and workability of Western Australia’s Native Title.
“The WA Government acknowledges the unique nature of Aboriginal cultural heritage and the need to protect, preserve and manage that heritage. Native Title bodies and regional corporations play a critical role in providing that protection,” he said.
“Working alongside the National Native Title Tribunal will ensure consultations are targeted and focused on meaningful outcomes for all stakeholders.”
The government will provide a final report by the end of this year.
