General workplace, mining operations and petroleum and geothermal energy operations have new Work Health and Safety regulations, with recent updates by the Western Australian Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety now in effect.
The new legislation, which came into effect 31 March 2022, aims to modernise the work health and safety laws for Western Australia. The new laws are based on the national model WHS Act and Regulations used in every other state and territory except Victoria.
The new Act replaces the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1984.
The work health and safety elements of the following Acts, covering mining and petroleum:
- Mines Safety and Inspection Act 1994
- Petroleum and Geothermal Energy Resources Act 1967
- Petroleum (Submerged Lands) Act 1982
- Petroleum Pipelines Act 1969.
