Mackay Regional Council Mayor, Greg Williamson, welcomed attendees to the 2024 Queensland Mining Exhibition and Conference (QME).

Mr Williamson said that QME being around for 30 years is an indication of the strength of the sector – for Australia, for Queensland and the regional community.

“This is a powerful sector and contributes over $86 billion to the Australian economy.

“This is an economic sector that delivers for the nation and will continue to do so for a very long time,” Mr Williamson said.

With more than 300 exhibitors and upwards of 5,000 expected attendees, Mr Williamson said that QME is important – not only for the region – but for the world.

Federal Minister for Resources, Madeleine King, then took to the stage and underscored the importance of Australia’s resources industry, and Queensland in particular.

“Resources has delivered for Australia in the past and will continue well into the future.

“Queensland and Western Australia are building the great cities of the world together,” Ms King said.

“We want to make sure we do more of the processing and refining of our commodities here. We’re bringing together policy, investment and collaboration to make this happen.”
