Australia’s biggest mining companies are trying something different.
A collaborative on-site testing program is underway in the Pilbara: two battery-electric Cat 793 XE Early Learner haul trucks are now at BHP’s Jimblebar mine.
The trial involves BHP, Rio Tinto and Caterpillar. This joint effort is essential because the transition to electric haulage requires the development of significant new infrastructure, including dedicated charging stations and power management systems, before full-scale deployment can occur.
The arrival of the trucks signifies a major step toward a more sustainable future in mining. This trial is set to evaluate heavy-haulage technology key to the region’s decarbonisation goals. Once commissioned, the program will rigorously test the viability of battery-electric technology as a direct diesel replacement in demanding, large-scale iron ore operations.
This initial phase will help to lay the groundwork for the future, helping to define the essential infrastructure and skilled personnel required for the next generation of low-emission mine sites.
“Powering up our first battery-electric haul trucks in the Pilbara is an important step forward on the mining industry’s road to decarbonisation,” BHP Western Australia iron ore asset president Tim Day said.
“Replacing diesel isn’t just about changing energy sources; it’s about reimagining how we operate and creating the technologies, infrastructure and supply chains to transform mining operations. These trials are a critical part of this work as we bring the testing to the reality of the Pilbara.”
The trial must confirm a high level of performance amid the region’s extreme heat and high dust levels, a challenging proposition that has necessitated the two powerhouse companies coming together.
“Decarbonising Rio Tinto’s fleet across our 18 Pilbara mines is a significant challenge,” Rio Tinto iron ore Pilbara mines managing director Andrew Wilson said.
“No single company can achieve zero emissions haulage on its own. It takes the whole industry working together. Through this industry-first collaboration to test Cat 793 XE Early Learner battery-electric haul trucks in Pilbara conditions, we hope to meet our shared goals as quickly and efficiently as we can.”
Following this initial joint trial, the two mining giants will independently determine progress toward scaled trials within their operations, driving both companies toward their individual net-zero operational greenhouse gas emissions goals by 2050.
