Award recipients have been announced for Western Australia’s Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety’s annual Resources Sector Awards for Excellence.
A bespoke ‘seeding machine’ supporting rehabilitation works at Iluka Resources’ Eneabba mine site won the company a Golden Gecko for environmental excellence at the awards, held Friday 14 October in Perth.
The innovation has significantly improved the diversity and growth of revegetation after mining, in an area with challenging natural conditions for seedling growth.
Ngurra Kujungka, together with Newcrest Telfer, won the Community Partnership Resources Sector Award for delivering community-driven sport and recreation programs for the Martu people of the Western Desert.
The partnership has seen Ngurra Kujungka’s programs expand to include sport, art, music and culture, which are used as a vehicle to drive improved outcomes in health, employment, education and community development.
State Minister for Mines and Petroleum, Bill Johnston, shared his congratulations with the category winners.
“Congratulations to the winners who have developed solutions to overcome challenges and deliver long-lasting positive outcomes for the local community and environment,” Mr Johnston said.
“The McGowan Government is committed to building a responsible and sustainable resources sector, and every year the Awards for Excellence showcase the partnerships and projects setting an excellent example of how this can be achieved.
“Sharing stories of success encourages other resource companies to continually strive to find new and improved ways of making a positive impact on Western Australian communities and the environment.”
