Thiess has been awarded a three-year contract extension worth $2.3 billion to continue its operations at Jellinbah Group’s Lake Vermont coal mine, located near Dysart in Queensland’s Bowen Basin.
The new agreement supersedes Thiess’ existing contract, which was set to run until 2026, and now extends the company’s involvement at the site through to June 2028.
Under the revised contract, Thiess will remain responsible for delivering end-to-end mining services. These include statutory mine operations, engineering and production, maintenance of mobile and fixed plant, rehabilitation activities, and the management of key site infrastructure.
The scope also covers the operation and upkeep of Jellinbah Group’s coal handling and preparation plant, train load-out facility, and the mine’s accommodation camp.
Thiess has played a key role at Lake Vermont since the project’s inception, having been awarded the initial mining contract in 2007 following its work on constructing the mine’s infrastructure.
“For nearly two decades, Thiess has worked with the Jellinbah Group to safely enhance and expand Lake Vermont Mines operations – driving efficiency, productivity and cost effectiveness through commodity cycles,” Thiess group executive chair and chief executive officer Michael Wright said.
“This further extension is a testament to the strong and trusted partnership built over many years, and reflects Thiess’ track record in the safe, efficient delivery of sustainable mining solutions.”
Thiess has also grown to be part of the local Dysart community, according to the company’s group executive – Australia East Rae O’Brien.
“[There’s] a strong focus on local employment, local procurement and ongoing partnerships with local schools and organisations such as the BMA CQ Rescue helicopter service and the Hear & Say Foundation.”
