Any doubts about the significance of the WA Mining Conference & Exhibition (WA Mining) 2025 – and the state’s role in bolstering the national resources sector – were dispelled the moment Mines and Petroleum Minister David Michael stepped up to the podium to deliver his opening address.
“This event brings together the people and ideas that will help shape the future of Western Australia,” Michael said, kicking off the annual industry gathering yesterday at the Perth Convention & Exhibition Centre.
Addressing the crowd, Michael laid out the state’s strategic priorities for a mining sector that is “sustainable, responsible, internationally competitive, ethical and value-adding.”
WA’s resources industry delivered a whopping $223 billion in sales last year, a figure Michael said underlines the “massive scale and impact of this sector.”
Iron ore continued to dominate, while gold remained a major contributor. At the same time, demand surged for critical minerals, with WA producing significant volumes of lithium, nickel, cobalt, vanadium and rare earth oxides.
“Mining is more than just a pillar of our economy,” Michael said. “It’s a platform for innovation, a driver of development, and a force for global change – especially in this era of decarbonisation and energy transition.”
He added that exploration investment exceeded $2.5 billion in 2024, the third-highest on record, while mining and infrastructure spending hit $33 billion, representing two-thirds of national mining investment.
“These results show a sector not only performing well, but driving long term prosperity,” Michael said.
To support future growth, he further emphasised the importance of reform and investment attraction.
“We’ve made significant progress in streamlining approvals and whole-of-government project delivery,” Michael said, citing the establishment of cross-sector triage teams, and amendments to amendments to the Environmental Protection Act.
He closed by underscoring the need to balance economic growth with environmental responsibility and social inclusion – a message that set the tone for the remainder of the conference.
“Through shared commitment and practical cooperation, we can build a mining sector that delivers lasting value for current and future generations,” Michael said.
WA Mining will wrap up today after hosting another round of innovative sessions focused on technology, sustainability and industry transformation.
