The Western Australian Government has launched three new initiatives to simplify and speed up mining approvals in the state, with the fresh reforms aimed at cutting red tape while maintaining strong environmental standards.
At the heart of the changes is the expansion of the Eligible Mining Activity framework, which fast-tracks low-risk mining projects. This allows the Department of Mines, Petroleum and Exploration to focus its efforts on more complex or higher-risk applications.
The government also introduced the Mining Development and Closure Proposal, combining the Mining Proposal and Mine Closure Plan into one streamlined document. This reduces duplication and scales requirements to match the size and risk of each project.
A new Approvals Statement framework will provide a clear record of approved mining activities, outlining conditions, closure plans, and review dates. This will help both regulators and companies manage compliance and closure obligations more effectively.
These reforms are supported by an upgraded digital platform, Resources Online, which will improve the submission and tracking of approvals.
Mines and Petroleum Minister David Michael said the changes reflect the government’s commitment to making approvals faster without compromising environmental protections.
“[We are] focused on maintaining strong, modern regulations that support responsible growth and give industry the certainty it needs to invest with confidence,” he said.
“The initiatives introduced … build on our broader strategy to reduce red tape and support timely approvals without compromising environmental standards.
“We are working hard to ensure mining approvals are efficient, but not at the expense of community expectations or the interests of Traditional Owners.”
