The new and improved Collie Underground Coal Mine Experience has reopened, following Western Australian Government-funded upgrades to transform it into a fascinating must-see heritage attraction featuring contemporary interactive exhibits and activities.
Originally constructed in the 1980s, the replica underground mine was officially reopened by Regional Development Minister, Don Punch, and Collie-Preston MLA, Jodie Hanns, and further enhances Collie’s diverse tourism offerings.
“The Western Australian Government is investing in a strong future for Collie where there is a range of employment opportunities including modern industrial jobs,” Mr Punch said.
“Part of setting up Collie for the long-term involves unlocking the town’s tourism potential through investing in tourist attractions and experiences such as the Collie Underground Coal Mine Experience, which is a credit to everyone involved – a unique heritage attraction.
“Many people have worked underground in Collie over the decades – and I encourage you to find out what life was like for them. It’s great that former mine workers are making themselves available to give guided tours, providing first-hand insight to the role they’ve played in powering the state.”
The immersive space, co-located with the Collie Visitor Centre, offers a window into the working life of Collie coal miners and the dangerous conditions they endured working underground in the 1950s.
Guests can explore the history of coal mining in Collie, gain insight into the jobs undertaken, peruse historic artefacts, and hear stories from former mine workers.
As part of the immersive experience, guests will feel the ground rumble in a simulated coal face blast that incorporates an audio-visual projection featuring a cameo by former Member for Collie-Preston Mick Murray.
The experience seeks to appeal to all ages, with an activity where youngsters are encouraged to look for the ‘critters’ that can be found hiding in the replica mine.
“I am really pleased with the work carried out to redevelop the replica coal mine. The attraction has long been an asset for Collie, but the upgrades transform it into a contemporary experience,” Ms Hanns said.
“The Collie Underground Coal Mine Experience highlights Collie’s history and the workers who helped shape our town, while offering up a new heritage experience for enthusiasts and families.
“Significant investment by the Western Australian Government into attractions such as the Wellington Dam Mural, Lake Kepwari recreational lake and adventure trails is unlocking the tourism potential of Collie – bringing visitors to the town and boosting the economy.”
