WA1 Resources has announced a major regulatory milestone for its Luni Niobium Project (Luni), which has been granted major project status (MPS) by the Australian Government.
The status was awarded by the Federal Minister for Industry and Innovation Tim Ayres for a period of three years.
The MPS recognition affirms the project’s potential to strengthen Australia’s economy, drive regional growth, and build sovereign capability in this strategic critical mineral, according to a company statement.
Since niobium was discovered at the Luni site, more than 83,000m of drilling has been completed with a combination of diamond (DD), air core (AC) and mud rotary methods. Niobium is designated as a critical mineral in Australia and is experiencing growing demand, particularly from advanced manufacturing sectors.
WA1 managing director Paul Savich said the MPS recognition of the Luni Niobium Project was a testament to the scale and grade of the discovery, making it the “most important niobium discovery globally in the past 70 years”.
“WA1 greatly appreciates the award of major project status to the Luni Niobium Project and thanks Minister Ayres and the Australian Federal Government for this recognition,” Savich said.
“This designation reinforces the project’s potential to deliver meaningful benefits for Australia and for regional communities, and we look forward to continuing our constructive engagement with both the Federal and State governments.”
Niobium’s primary function is as a powerful alloying element, and when added to steel, it significantly increases the material’s strength and durability. Niobium-containing alloys are used in jet engines, rockets, oil and gas pipelines, and in major components such as beams and girders for buildings and oil rigs.
